Summer’s out and most of our volunteers are winging their way back to Ireland after spending weeks in Ethiopia. They can, however, come back proud, having made a valuable contribution to the children of Atse Primary School, adding to the progress on projects in Bulbulla and supporting the general work of the Daughters of Charity in Addis Ababa.
Based between Addis and the rural village of Bulbulla, these volunteers embraced an intriguing culture and sought to use their talents in whichever way they could. Teaching English, art, PE and life skills to children or working on the archives of the Daughters of Charity since 1928, their contributions were valued.
Bulbulla, which is five hours from the nation’s capital at the northern tip of the great Rift Valley of Africa, is on the cusp of change. Plans have been drawn up for an irrigation project which aims to add value to the lives of this community. Young people will learn how to diversify crops and grow more food for all. Volunteers have assisted with this planning and supported funding applications to strengthen the potential outcomes of this project.
The summer schools for the children in Atse and Bulbulla not only provide them with some extra classes but also give them a fun learning experience and a chance to try out the different activities and games organised by our volunteers. At the end of the four weeks there are often tears and this year was no different. Hopefully our friendly and entertaining volunteers will be back soon again for next year’s summer school!
We thank our 2015 summer volunteers for their sincere commitment, their flexibility and their sense of humour. We really hope that you will volunteer with us again to continue all the great work that you have been part of. We also thank our donors who supported us during the summer. You can still make a contribution by texting VLM to 50300 to donate €4 to support our work. 100% of your donation goes to Vincentian Lay Missionaries across most network operators.
